Our Story
In 2017, Ludivine Berouard, Tommie Hooft, and Boby Ogwang met in Uganda. The three co-founders launched Marula Consultancy, which has been successfully running in Uganda for the past two years. Through 100 plus interviews with farmers, about the sustainability challenges that they faced, the idea of MAWA was found.
Firstly, Poultry farmers explained to us that they are no longer able to access fishmeal, their primary source of poultry feed. Because of this, they are not able to meet the rising demands for high quality protein. This is due to overfishing in Lake Victoria which led to high costs and low quality sources of the traditional silverfish.
Secondly, Kampala produces over 1500 Tonnes of waste per day, 80% of which is organic waste. Currently, this high-nutrient waste ends up in landfills and open dumps, ultimately leading to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution throughout Kampala with no second life.
Uganda has a rapidly growing population, with rising middle-class incomes which is only leading to increased demands for protein and waste generation.
Both these challenges, made the black soldier fly insect the perfect answer. Through our process we are turning Uganda's waste into feed and fertilizer. We aim to process 20% of Kampala's organic waste by 2022 per year, freeing up landfills and reducing overfishing. We will sell 60 Tonnes of protein per month.
Transforming Africa’s city waste into sustainable protein.
Mawa uses the black soldier fly insect to process waste into valuable by-products. By Providing sustainable and circular solutions, we make farming more profitable throughout Africa along the entirety of the value chain.
